Lori Gordon | DEGREES OF FREEDOM

Degrees of Freedom is set amid the streets of Seville, Spain, and chronicles one man’s search to mend the unraveling seams of his life — a rocky relationship with a temperamental daughter and a failing epistolary (and achingly platonic) friendship with an art critic for the Rome Times – using art as his therapy. As he immerses himself in the vibrancy of the Sevillan streets, the people, and most compellingly, the portraiture housed in the maze of tiny galleries at the city’s Museo des Bellas Artes, he is shaken into a surreal sense of consciousness by the profound impact that art, space, and history can stamp – sometimes favorably, and sometimes mercilessly — on life.

Lori Gordon began traveling and writing about travel at a very early age, but it was not until recently that she began to piece together all of those thoughts and words to make sense of them in a cohesive way. When common themes of art and art history emerged, it spurred an exploration into how people around the world approach art and relate it to their own life.

Museums from Seville to Budapest to Charleston provide the characters, the inspiration, and the palate for Lori’s work, where media–such as sculpture, collage, or charcoal–can evoke a rare glimpse of the human dimension. What revelations about life emerge when an elderly man in a wheelchair gazes up at a broad and bare-chested Michaelangelo? Or when a child stares, perplexed, at the extraordinary neck of a Modigliani?

A systems analysis consultant with a Masters Degree in Public Administration, Lori spends her free time writing fiction that has appeared in publications including the MUSED Literary Review. Her work can be found at her website, lorigordon.wordpress.com.

Degrees of Freedom is truly a wonderful novella and such a page-turner! Once I started the book, I finished that very same evening. Degrees gives such an initmate portrayal of the lives and personalities of its characters. With a background in art history, I was also impressed by the accuracy of Gordon's art history knowledge and her ability to communicate the technically difficult subject matter. Gordon's wonderfully descriptive writing also brought life to the artwork, as if I were there within the museum admiring the paintings on the walls.

I eagerly look forward to future works by Lori Gordon.
